How to be a better singerToday I just wanted to revisit how to be a better singer by having good posture. Better singing can be achieved by just slight changes in how you stand and move and has a large effect on how effectively you breathe as you sing as well. Not only this, good posture makes you look more confident and makes you feel more confident when you get it right.

When you sing you should be paying attention to how you position all of your body. Your feet, hips, knees, core, chest, shoulder, arms, hands and of course your head. If you get all these parts aligned correctly the sounds you make will be fuller, louder and easier to wield to hit the right notes. Here are some posture tips for better singing to get you started.

Basic Posture Tips for Better Singing:

  • Keep your chin parallel to the floor approximately. Holding it too high or too low will not help in natural singing.
  • Try to hold your shoulder back and down a bit. Make sure this is not uncomfortable however and hold your chest high as you do this.
  • Your core or abdomen should be firm and straight but in a position where it can expand and retract without discomfort.
  • Keep your hands relaxed and at your sides holding the arms out from the body a little bit to not interfere with breathing.
  • Keep your knees a little bit loose. Too many singers lock their knees which stiffens the whole body straining your vocal abilities.
  • Keep your feet slightly apart and with one a little bit in front of the other.
  • Makes sure the weight of your body is slightly forward also.

To achieve this posture try this Posture Correcting Routine:

  • Stand with your back to a wall making sure your heel, calves, buttocks, head and back of course at all touching the wall.
  • Place your hand on your abdomen and makes rue you are breathing in and out correctly without any problems.
  • Now shift your body forward just a bit until you are standing on your toes but not with discomfort. Get the feeling that you are floating a little.
  • Change your posture to one that is slouched to feel the difference at this point. Make sure when you sing you do not slip that far.
  • Lastly go back to the tiptoe position and place on foot slightly forward and you have your correct posture!

I hope that helps! Does Lemon, Water & Honey Help You Sing Better?

Lemon Water HoneyThere is a common bit of advice out there that has become perhaps a bit of an old wives tale and a bit distorted over time which is, does lemon, water & honey help you sing better? I just wanted to clarify this for those singers who hear this offhand and may not understand fully.

This is a remedy for if you have a sore throat of some kind and are feeling a bit raspy. It will not do much for you if your throat is fine though. A concoction of lemon and honey in water is actually not the best thing for you though because they do different things.

Lemon has a powerful acid in it which can actually burn your throat slightly if you use too much. However, if you have a lot of phlegm in your throat due to a cold or flu this is very beneficial. Lemon will break down the mucus more easily allowing your throat to be less clogged.

Honey is quite different. Honey is a soothing addative to a warm glass of water and will help when you throat is sore and dry. Adding honey to a herbal tea is also an excellent way of soothing  a sore throat so you can sing better.

Lastly is water. This is not just a carrier for the honey or lemon. Hydration is very important to your body and to your throat and sinuses and everything to do with singing! Drinking a lot of water every day is a good idea in any case but especially if you are worried about your throat and singing voice.

Lastly, make sure you get some rest and dont strain yourself if you are feeling a bit off. Take care of your body and it will take care of your vocal abilities.

how to become a better singerI do not think I have mentioned this tip on how to become a better singer before. It may seem odd to do to start with but it can really help you sing clearly and powerfully and even faster as well.

The technique is to pronounce all the consonants such as “b – c – d – g – j – k – l – p – q – s – t – v – w – x – z” which are known as voiced consonants. These are items that have a definite sounds to them you can pronounce clearly. The other consonants “f – h – m – n – r” are known as imploded consonants. These letters when you say them in words are not definite sounds that are easy to pronounce. for instance F sounds like “fffff”.

Practice voicing these consonants of both types both on their own and in songs. Singing just each letter to a tune can be very helpful for instance and then singing  a song where you pronounce the consonants in works very clearly; especially if they are at the end of a word or the start.

For instance. Try singing this line from a song:

You’re my Guiding LighT,
When THere’s no GuiDing LighT leFT insiDe,
There’s noGuiding LighT in our Lives

Keep singing sings and work on that pronunciation. You will find that you sing more clearly and more accurately and in better pitch with a wider mouth as well. Try it, the results are always good!

Learn To Sing on Perfect PitchHitting your notes on pitch very time you would think is an essential skill for singers but surprisingly this is not taught to aspiring singers very often and many people think it is not even that useful a skill. I disgree and think that you need to learn to sing on perfect pitch if you are to be a successful singer. I heard somewhere that when you look at who has this skill, the moe successful the singer the greater chance they have this ability.

Lucky for you it can be trained!

The trick to this abilist to be able to sing on pitch every tiem and never to fall flat or to gin the note too sharp is to be able to hear that toen in your head before you sing it. Many vocalists tend to just use a piano to “tune themselves in” to begin with but if you have perfect pitch you can have an innate tuning and always know if you are in tune. This enables you to also compose music better, understand music to a greater degree and will lend you huge amounts of confidence when you sing as well.

I mentioned this can be trained right?

There are many ways of understanding perfect pitch. It is not a simple mental trick you can learn quickly though but it is not something you have to be born with either. It takes time and training and hard work to be honest. Here are some tips to help you learn to sing on perfect pitch:

  • Pick a common note that you want to train your ear, voice and mind to.
  • Play the note repeatedly on a piano or other instrument and keep your eyes closed.
  • Try to develop a picture of that note in your head. Imagine how it sounds to you as apart from other notes. It might “feel” twangy or strong or weird … whatever works. You can also associate a person or an object with that note. This visualisation technique is very helpful.
  • Try playing random notes now without looking. Keep pressing notes unil you fall upon the one you were studying and see if you can pick it from the random ones to test yourself.
  • Repeat this with a particular note for a few days until you feel confident.inse and repeat with a new note!

Now this can be a long and time consuming process but as I have stressed it is an amaznig skill to have and will id you in singing any style of music. There is a way to help you achieve perfect pitch more easily though with the Singorama downloadable singing guide. It has a program called perfect pitch pro which is actually a little game that makes this dull and repetative exercise quite fun!

Tips for a better singing voiceYou do not need complicated singing equipment or a coach hovering over your shoulder every time you sing to make you a better singer.

These tips for a better singing voice can help you enhance your voice from your living room or bedroom so you can feel more confident and you can do them whenever you like!

  • Do Proper Warms Ups – Sometimes when we are at home we get too comfortable and forget to warm up properly before we sing. This can lead to straining and poor singing. Remember to sing some scales and other warm up techniques.
  • Relax – This is probably the easiest thing to do but is something you should be conscious of. Be aware how relaxed you are when you are singing at home. Knowing this feeling can help when you get nervous singing in front of others.
  • Choose a Mix of Songs – Don’t just sing your favourite songs but also do not sing just the songs you think you have to know or should be singing to challenge your voice. Pick a mix of genres and styles but always remember to keep singing what you love.
  • Breathing Exercises – You can do singing breathing exercises which are excellent in helping you train and adjust your voice but also doing exercises to expand and exercise your lungs without singing is a good start as well. More on breathing techniques while singing here.
  • Amazing Mirrors – Mirrors are awesome! I have seen so many students improve their singing capabilities by just singing while looking into a mirror. What this does is allow you to see yourself as you sing. This in turn allows you to play with your posture, facial expressions and other physical elements of singing. A small change can sometimes yield amazing results!
  • Sing Like Nobody is Listening – Most importantly just sing! Sing with a passion and love it. Expand your knowledge on singing in terms of technique but also in terms of the lives of singers and the history of singing. A passion fro singing in all forms will aid you in ways you can never imaging … become obsessed!

How to Sing Better for Auditions

how to sing better for auditions

If you want to be a singer of any note you need to know how to sing better for auditions.

This is something that many fledgling vocalists tend to ignore until the last minute to their detriment in fact! Making a good impression for an audition is essential to get a part and boost your career so lets take a look at better singing tips for auditions and other general tips as well.

Choosing The Songs

The key to a successful audition is confidence. Sometimes a brilliant singer can get passed over if they sing songs that they are not confident enough with in an effort to impress when singing a familiar song would have been more appropriate. Picking a song that you can sing with confidence and that will show off your vocal capabilities will show you are a better singer than trying to pick a less familiar song just because you think it might be more appropriate.

Of course singing a song that is totally inappropriate for the type of audition is also a death knell to your chances. Make sure you have a repertoire of songs from a number of different genres you are well familiar with. If you are auditioning for a pop show then have a pop song ready, if you are auditioning for opera then make sure you know just a few good opera songs.

That is another thing, you may tend to find they want you to sing a couple of songs not just one so make sure you have a few songs at the ready but always open with your best in the audition. Make sure you have these songs on tape or CD or MP3 or whatever they will need to play it and if you can, choose ones without long instrumental introductions so you do not waste their time. Be aware however that often they will ask you to sing without acoompanyment so be prepared for that.

What to Wear

Choose something comfortable and nonrestrictive. You need to be able to move about easily and your singing voice should be unimpeded by tightness around the torso or neck. However you must also balance this with looking good too! Make sure you do not wear sweat pants or overly comfortable shoes, a sensible medium can usually be found btu remember the real test is your voice and stage abilities.

Also, I recommend not to wear high heels if you are a lady unless you are a superstar and can move gracefully in them. Nothing is worse than falling on stage because you insisted on high heels over a nice but lower pair of shoes.

Confidence Tips

Confidence is key. I am assuming by this stage you can sing well enough to be bold enough to audition so now you just need to make sure you show it all in style! Here is a short list to help boost your confidence and create an optimal audition.

  • Before you hit the stage do some relaxation exercises. Close your eyes and breathe gently but deeply for a few minutes to calm your nerves.
  • Keep your head high and your stride purposeful. Don’t be timid in your walk or your posture. Even if you feel like throwing up from nerves keep moving confidently and it will lend you confidence.
  • Greet the judges and talk a little about the song you will sing and why you chose it. This may set you apart from the others and open up some questions they might have for you which is good.
  • Once this is done nothing else should enter your mind but the music and your performance in it. Try to forget anyone is even there and just sing with passion!
  • If you stumble and make a mistake so not stop! Keep on going and ignore it.
  • Smile, enjoy yourself and be yourself! Do not try to be anyone else but yourself and show your personal style!

Hopefully this has given you a grounding on how to sing better for auditions.
