In our first article, we have looked at the first two steps to improving our vocal range. It is important that you have identified your vocal range so you can set realistic goals as you improve. Now let us look at the next three steps together.

Do these Vocal exercises

As with your muscles in your body, the muscles surrounding your voice box (larynx) need to be strengthened and worked on to allow you to be able to control your voice better. The ability to sing a high note is really the ability to control your voice better. These exercises will help you to extend your Voice range.

First, start at the lower end of your vocal range (this is the lowest note you can sing comfortably). You don’t want to just suddenly jump up to the highest note – let your voice warm up gently. Sing the word “hmm” and feel how the note resonates in your larynx and chest area. You don’t want the sound to be shallow, but you want it to be a deeper chest tone. Open the back of your throat (like when you yawn except now with your mouth closed).

Now slowly move up the scale holding four beats per note. Feel the resonance of each note. You will feel as you move up the scale that the resonance will shift from your chest to your head. This exercise will help you to recognise and control your voice. As you move up the scale, the resonating tone should be consistent; it should not shift into a nasal tone. As you practice you will notice that you will have better control of your voice. This control is very important to improving your vocal range.

Another fun exercise you can practice with is to sing arpeggios (Doh, Mee, Soh, or C, E, G) with the words “Gi,” (pronounced as “Gyeee”) “Ki” or “Qi.” Sing it in this arrangement – Doh, Mee, Soh, Soh, Soh, Mee, Doh but with the words “Gi.” Then slowly move up the scale a semitone each time with each cord. For male singers you would want to start with the B key, then you move on to C, C#, etc. until you reach the B flat key. For female singers you would want to start with the G key, then move on to G#, A, etc. until you reach the next G key. The goal of this exercise is not to reach very high notes but to teach your vocal cords how to adduct (or close itself) properly. Throughout this exercise you want to maintain the same solid sound and not a nasal sound.

With these exercises, your vocal muscles will grow stronger allowing you to reach higher notes with greater control and ease.

Practice Constantly

Wise men says, practice makes perfect, and they’re right! Without practice do you think your vocal range would just improve by it self? You need to keep practicing! (There is no other way of saying that.) Do these exercises everyday or at least every other day. Like other muscles in your body, your vocal muscles can become stiff and tight when not used regularly (sorry, but talking a lot won’t help as you want to target the specific muscle group that helps you sing). When it is stiff you will realise that your vocal range will be greatly affected (this is why it is harder to sing songs with high notes in the morning when you just woke up).

You need to put in effort to practice; there are no shortcuts to improving your Range of Voice.

Enjoy Singing

To list this as a step to improve your vocal range seems to be strange. But to enjoy singing is so important that it cannot be overemphasised. As you practice singing, sometimes frustration may set in. You don’t see yourself improving as quickly as you would like to; you don’t see results. You feel like throwing in the towel and giving up. But you must realise that you have actually never fail in your struggle until you quit trying.

Having a right mentality is very important and to enjoy singing is the mentality you must have. If you are singing with enjoyment you will see yourself improving faster. This step seems so simple but in reality it is something we have to remind ourselves to do. When you feel frustrated and come to the point where you feel like giving up, stop practicing for a while. Take a break, sing your favourite song, listen to some music, watch some videos on YouTube, be inspired to sing better, and start enjoying singing again.

Is this your experience? Trying to sing a song that you like but not being able to reach that reasonably high note? While every singer aspires to have a large vocal range, the reality of life is that not every singer can have the same large vocal ranges (especially those that can reach the lowest E and the highest D).

Different singers have varying vocal ranges hence the classifications of soprano, contralto, tenor, and bass. This is not to discourage us from giving up singing. In fact, the quality of your voice is not affected by your range of voice at all. There are great singers who may have a small vocal range but are still able to move the hearts of their listeners. Of course this then does not mean that we do not want to improve our vocal range, with a larger vocal range, we will be able to sing a greater variety of songs. Furthermore as singers we should always seek to improve various aspect of our singing ability.

While we may never be able to have vocal ranges of singers like Pavarotti (some of you may), there are still steps we can take to improve our singing range. In fact, I believe that many are not singing to the full potential of their vocal range. This article will outline several baby steps to help you improve your vocal range.

Don’t Push Your Voice

This first step is perhaps the simplest one to understand yet the hardest one to practice. This is probably the most basic, and if I may add, the most dangerous mistake a young singer can make. Does your throat hurt after choir practice or a karaoke session with friends? If it does you could have been straining your voice in trying to reach that high notes. Sometimes a singer may think that if he forces enough air out, he will be able to reach that high note. This is totally not true. In fact, when you push your voice, you risk straining your vocal cords. The vocal cords are made up of delicate tissue that can be damaged if you keep straining it while singing (sometimes the damage may be permanent). If you want to improve your vocal range the first thing you must do is to stop straining your voice.

Identify Your Unique Range of Voice

Everyone is born with a unique range of voice – while not as unique like our fingerprints, it is still unique. We would call this our natural range of voice. The problem with many aspiring singers is the failure to recognise their own unique range of voice. If you want to expand your vocal range, you first need to admit that this is the range that you have been endowed with and start working from their. The most common vocal ranges are the soprano, contralto, tenor, baritone and bass. There are some other special classifications of voices like mezzo-soprano or countertenor, which will not be discussed in this article. Let me now move on to show you how to identify your natural range. It would be good if you can now go to the piano or find any musical instruments to help you in this exercise (you must want to print this article out if you are going to the piano, unless you are going to carry the piano here). Please note that this exercise is just a guide and we are now talking about the natural range of voices. There may be some who can have a larger range and can easily sing, for example, both tenor and bass.

To identify your natural vocal range, first start by humming the middle C note. Next, slowly move down the scale of notes (this would be towards the left of middle C on the piano) – without pushing! – until you can no longer sing the low notes comfortably. Take note of the lowest note you can reach comfortably. Starting from middle C again, now work you way up the scale and until you are not able to sustain a note comfortably (or when you start screeching. But always remember: Don’t push and don’t strain your vocal cords). Take note of the highest note you can reach comfortably.

If you are a soprano, your range would be approximately from the A note below middle C (A3) to the G note 2 octaves (one octave is made up of eight notes) above middle C (G6). This would be a range of about 3 octaves.

If you have a Contralto’s range, your voice would range from the E note below middle C (E3) to the D note an octave above the middle C (D5).

If you are a tenor, you would range from the C note one octave below middle C (C3) to the C note one octave above the middle C (C5). This will be a range of about two octaves.

A baritone’s voice range would be between the A note one octave below the middle C (A2) to the A note above the middle C (A4).

The bass would have a vocal range of between the F note one octave below the middle C (F2) to the E note above the middle C (E4).

Take some time to find out your natural voice range. Good singers always their own voice. If you want to improve, you need to know your voice better – the strengths and weaknesses of your voice. You should start to know your voice better by finding out your own vocal range. This will help you have a realistic expectation in your journey to be a better singer.

Simple Rules For Singing At A Karaoke Bar

A regular person who walks into a karaoke bar for the first time will probably be unaware of all the unwritten rules that surround this unique hobby. They may look at what’s going on and even think that there are no rules because karaoke can seem rather chaotic to the untrained eye. But all you have to do is spend a night or two in your local karaoke bar and you will discover that there is a lot more to it than what appears on the surface. In fact, there are a series of rules and regulations that are often unspoken, and without them karaoke wouldn’t be able to function. People who regularly go to karaoke bars learn through experience how to behave, and if you would like a quick lesson then here are some of the most basic rules for singing at a karaoke.

It’s absolutely essential that you have a healthy degree of respect for karaoke itself. Don’t walk into any bar making fun of other singers. If you do it will not go unnoticed and you’ll stain in your reputation right away. Sometimes people make fun of others when it comes to karaoke because they are insecure themselves about how they might do on stage. Just keep in mind that it’s never a good idea to openly laugh or mock anyone else, no matter what their particular singing level. If you have negative thoughts then keep them to yourself because otherwise you’ll be the one who looks bad.

You also have to get a feel for who the karaoke regulars are, and often they get certain privileges that newcomers don’t. For example, a person who is a regular at a karaoke bar often gets to sing more songs during the night. They might also have dibs on popular favorites, and it may seem like the karaoke DJ favors them. Sometimes you just have to pay your dues before you get your turn at using the karaoke machine and there is definitely a pecking order when it comes to song selection and how many times you get to perform. Don’t complain about this fact, just work within the system and show other singers that you have the work ethic necessary to improve your performance.

One of the most important rules about karaoke is to respect the hobby itself without taking it too seriously. It’s all about fun and nobody expects you to be able to sing as well as a professional celebrity. This is your chance to let loose and experience something that not everyone gets to enjoy, so enjoy your time on the stage and try to get along with everyone else. Get out there and seeing today!

Experts everywhere agree that singers who sing on pitch are far more pleasing to the listening ear and more entertaining to watch. They’ve also been known to get a second chance to perform in front of people- always a good sign!

Ok, obviously singing on pitch is an important consideration when approaching the endeavor of vocal prowess, that’s not too revolutionary of a concept. But you won’t even make it to a commercial on the American Idol Auditions before you realize that this hard and fast rule isn’t always held in as high a regard as it should be, as they all consider themselves legitimate singers. (Couldn’t somebody have sent them some sing lessons or something before they embarrassed themselves like that?)

So how do you go about learning to sing on pitch consistently and effortlessly?

I’m assuming you wouldn’t be reading this article if you didn’t have some sort of burning desire deep inside your soul just screaming to be released and unleashed into the world (small desires count too). So I’m also assuming that you’re not the type to get discouraged to know that there is a certain amount of work involved in becoming good at something that you are not quite good at yet. Good, because there is work involved. That being said, you need to be encouraged- there are plenty of people who were worse singers than you who can now sing better than you hope to, and it didn’t take them a lifetime to get there.

“So how do you sing better?” Here’s an exercise for you to start with. In fact, this exercise is foundational as you pursue a better voice. Master this exercise, and you’ll be well on your way. It’s the exercise of finding a great coach to learn from.

You need to trust me on this. A few “tips” here and there will do very little to help you. Your voice is 2 things that you need to start thinking about. Most importantly, your voice is an instrument. Nobody has ever picked up a guitar a couple times or read a book and became a decent guitar player (trust me, they practiced more than you think). It’s the same situation for your vocals. Don’t assume that because you sing a lot in the shower and you think it sounds ok that you’re excluded from practice time!

Second, your vocals are muscles. They need good, focused workouts, and plenty of rest. Don’t show up to the gym twice a year and enter any body-building competitions. You’re not going to impress anybody! And trust me- trying to sing along to the radio is not going to work out your voice- it’s going to wear out your voice. (You’re pushing too hard, you’ve got way to many of the wrong muscles involved, and you have no resonance- I can see it already). It will take a smart level of training to get you in any kind of shape. If we’re going to run this allegory (pun definitely intended) all the way out- you need the best trainers you can find. You need a Bob or Jillian. This is like the Biggest Loser, and if you don’t want to get pegged with that label, get serious about learning what you’re doing. It’s not that hard and it’s not that expensive.

You’ve probably heard from musicians and singing teachers just how crucial it is to train your ear in order to both hit the right note every time and ultimately sing better.

We know it’s hard to believe, but if you can hear the difference between any two notes (i.e. a given one is higher than the other), then you know that you are not tone deaf. You have a natural inborn ability for perfect pitch which, like most singers, is just waiting to be harnessed.

“Perfect Your Pitch Pro” is a very simple but powerful computer game designed to train your ear to be able to recognize all 36 notes on the chromatic scale (across the 3 center octaves). The difficulty level ranges from easy to medium and than to hard.

As you progress, the game gradually becomes more difficult. Just by playing this game, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll train your ear via self-correction without much effort. Eventually, you’ll clock the game and be able to recognize and sing all 36 center notes on the piano as they are played.

Your friends will be saying, “You have a great ear for music!” And you’ll not only find it far easier to hit the right note at all times. You’ll also have a better ear for music which in turn will pay you big, big dividends in your singing progress. What an opportunity!
Most vocal ranges span two octaves, or 13 to 14 white notes on a piano, although perhaps only one and a half octaves of those will be able to be sung consistently with good quality and pitch. With Singorama’s extensive practice exercises and training, you can extend your vocal range up to four octaves or more. In fact, many Singorama students find themselves singing a full octave higher within the first few weeks!

Like any muscles, the vocal chords can be trained to make different co-ordinations. For example, a baseball player learns proper technique in order to hit the ball further. Even bodybuilders with exceptionally strong muscles cannot hit the ball as far as a baseball player with good technique could. Vocal technique or coordination can be taught to vocal chords without necessarily needing to strengthen them.

With Singorama, you’ll discover in step-by-step detail exactly how to ensure that you are not only capable of singing high pitch notes, but also staying on pitch. Better yet, we’ve also included high-quality illustrations and audio courses to aid your learning. Vocal technique is extremely important, and by following the Singorama course, you’ll develop a professional quality vocal tone!

There’s more – with Singorama, you’ll even learn how to keep yourself from developing bad habits such as singing out of tune, breaking between head and chest voices, keeping consistent tonal quality, vowel sounds and more!

Singing can be harder than you think. Singers work very hard to get the results that they want. They usually try to sing higher to improve their singing capability. Well established and talented singers have the ability to sing higher whereas average singers have to practice to bring the needed pitch in their voice. There are various ways to achieve these results, which are discussed below:

Improve your posture

The correct posture can greatly influence your singing abilities. You should always stand when singing as this ensures that the air you need can flow easily in and out of your lungs without obstruction. Thus, the better you breathe, the better you can sing; as singing is all about maintaining the pitch of voice.

Breathe correctly

Having good breathing technique is the next thing that is critical for a singer. To ensure that ample amount of air gets into your lungs, take a deep breath while keeping your back straight. By getting enough air into your lungs, you have a better chance of reaching high notes. If you want to be able to sing higher notes, practice trying to breath at a slower rate and also make sure to use your diaphragm muscles as much as possible. Your diaphragm muscles are below your ribcage.

Build your voice power

Voice power is a natural ability, which differs from person to person. Some people have soft voice while others have loud. Being a singer, you need to learn how to be comfortable with your natural voice to be able to reach your best potential. Learn to sing with your natural voice and don’t feel the need to force it. Your audience should feel like they are listening to a natural performance and not something strained.

Find your voice

The voices on which a singer operates are classified as chest and head voice. The normal voice that you can produce from the depth of your body is your chest voice. On the other hand, the head voice is usually higher than the chest voice. Being able to change effortlessly from your normal voice to your head voice for higher pitches while singing comes with dedication and practice. Rather than trying to quicken the process, you should take your time and let it develop naturally over time. Another option is to use a mixed voice to reach high notes.

Practice

Practice is the key to sing higher. You should devote around 15 to 30 minutes daily to practice. Never start singing without preparing your lungs by breathing exercises. Use different scales to practice. Start at the lowest note you can reach and gradually move up the scale to your highest note. Choose your favorite songs for practice. With every day practice, your vocal cord will become stronger and you will be able to sing for increased lengths of time at a higher pitch. It is important to keep your back straight while practicing and to have frequent water breaks. If you follow these tips, you will soon achieve the desired results.

Develop Your Singing

If you’re serious about singing, you doubtless want to improve your singing voice. If you’re a novice, it’s most likely advisable to take at least a number of vocal lessons with a regional tutor.

A professional trainer can offer you the advice and guidance you want to get on the right path.
Before you are able to improve your singing voice, you should objectively examine the current condition of your voice and your musical targets. Record yourself singing and play it back. Do you like the way your voice sounds? Most people are less than delighted the first time they hear their own recorded voice.
Consider the singers you feel admiration for.

What is it regarding their singing that you would like to emulate ? Take into consideration other singers whose work you don’t care for. What don’t you like concerning it?
Listen to a extensive range of singers and mark down what you care for or don’t enjoy about each one. Pay close interest to singers who execute the category of composition you’re keen on and whose voices are just like what you want yours to turn into.

Finally, even if opera isn’t your thing, listen to a couple of opera singers. Concentrate on their tone quality, vibrato, phrasing, in addition to dynamics. It’s possibly best if they’re singing in a unfamiliar language, so you are not distracted by the lyrics.

Why do you sing? It may look like a stupid inquiry, but the response is vital. Do you sing simply for the pleasure of it, or did the church choir director twist your arm because they wanted to fill up a spot ? (If that is the case, you should take it as a compliment. No matter how severely they wanted individuals, they wouldn’t recruit someone with a nasty voice!)
What type of music do you want to sing? What are your musical objectives ? Do you desire to develop into a licensed musician or music tutor, or do you want a role in the next musical at your local village theatre?
The solutions to these questions will give you an picture of how to go on. You are essentially deciding where you are at the present, where you want to get to, and mapping out the course by which to get there.

Aim high, although at the same time be practical. Achieving your goals and desires won’t come about in a single day —it will take hard labor, discipline, and commitment. Once you have your road map, make a plan and follow it. Be willing to search for help and take advice from knowledgeable gurus. Their responsibility is to assist you to develop your singing voice.
If you can’t find a local teacher or cannot afford their fees, you might like to look into online singing training. The key shortcoming is that you cannot get immediate advice on your progress, as you would from an in-person coach.

Internet programs also tend to use a one-size-fits-all methodology, whereby a trainer can offer alternative techniques if a particular system or exercise doesn’t work in favor of you.
Then again, a high-quality internet program, such as Singing Is Easy or Singorama, can teach you the rudiments to improve your singing voice and perfect your performance skills. Since there is no response from a tutor, it’s helpful to tape your practice sessions and listen dispassionately when you play them back. You might wish to also solicit a trusted acquaintance to listen and comment.
Objective criticism is essential. You will not improve your singing voice if you do not know the specific vocal traits you ought to work on. This doesn’t signify you must be disapproving of yourself, just straightforward and practical. Most online courses offer examples of good-quality tone for comparison purposes.
Any good quality process or program will necessitate you to work and exercise faithfully so as to attain your goal. If you are willing to do what it takes, you will develop your singing voice and be that much nearer to your dream.

Enhance Your Lower Vocal Register

Most reports on how to improve singing range concentrate on adding high notes, leaving altos and basses feeling overlooked . Deeper voices, this one’s for you! We’ll examine some ways to insert deep notes through the use of your chest voice.
Everybody uses the chest voice for usual talking . In fact , your speaking voice can coach you a great deal concerning your singing voice. The manner by which you use your talking voice can either assist or hamper your singing voice.

Let’s start by examining your oral communication voice. Try making different non-speech noises : laugh, cry , yawn, sigh. If you have a piano or tone pipe available, locate the closest tone to the noises you made. Now verbalize a few monosyllables: uh-huh , mm-hmm , oho . Again, find the matching tone on a piano or tone pipe.

Now articulate a few straightforward sentences, like “my name is _____” or “I like to sing”. Again , find the corresponding pitch .

Ideally , the tone should be the same for speaking as it is for monosyllabic or non-speech sounds , but many people attempt to speak at a deeper tone than is normal for their voice. This is not a healthy thing to do .
Carry on exploring your voice by speaking monosyllabically at diverse tone stages on a piano. Locate the lowest tone you can articulate without sounding gruff .

The hoarse sound is often called “vocal fry” and is not beneficial to maintain . Your ultimate speaking pitch ought to be about four to five steps above your vocal fry point .

Subsequently , articulate sentences or read a section aloud. Experiment by means of higher speaking tones to observe how high you can go. Along the way, note where your voice is on the whole relaxed and where you start to hear and feel strain.
While using your “chest voice”, you will feel vibration (reverberation ) in your chest when making tones in that pitch range. Lay your hand lightly on your upper chest, with your thumb and fingers resting on your collarbones. Do a yawn-slide (breathe out on the syllable “hee” or “hoo” while sliding from the summit of your range to the base ). Your hand ought to sense reverberation as you slide down into your chest voice.

While it feels like the resonance is taking place in your chest, it’s really occuring in your throat and oral cavity . The vibration you feel is the product of air moving from your lungs and over your vocal folds .

A simple low -range singing work out is the fifth slide. Beginning in the comfortable middle section of your range, employ the buzz (puckered lips vibrating as air is expelled ) or a syllable like “vaw” to sing the initial tone and slide down five steps. In the key of C major it would be G-C, so-do. The slide should be smooth , not bumpy or creaky .

Initiate each repetition a half-step below the previous one.
If you feel bumpy or creaky vibrations as you descend the scale, you’re possibly holding some tension. Stop and do some face and neck relaxation exercises . Gently knead your face and throat, then try again . While you descend the scale, shut your mouth a little from its starting situation .

Next , sing an octave scale up and back down, again by means of the buzz or “vaw”. As you go up the scale, allow your jaw to drop and your mouth to open a bit wider, next reverse that as you come back down. It may be advantageous to picture your tone on a path leading away from yourself, with low notes closest and high notes farthest away. Perhaps even move one hand away from your body as you travel up the scale and back to your side as you descend .

The arpeggio is an additional helpful exercise. Sing do-mi-so-do-so-mi-do on a vowel resonance , for instance “oo”, “ee”, or “ah”. Start every new arpeggio a half-step deeper than the last .
As with any singing technique , supplementing to your lower range will require time and effort . If you are patient and persistent , you will observe positive results.

Voice Lessons OnlineI just wanted to tell you about voice lessons online today. Many vocal coaches may hate me for talking about these because I think they could seriously cut into their business after what i have sen them do because if you want to know how to be a great vocalist then you can learn to how to sing online without needing people like myself to teach you … at least at a beginner and intermediate level.

For those who want to just check out how to take vocal lessons online click here

You see I recommended to Emma, a student of mine who was moving way out country away from civilization to perhaps try an online voice lesson. I first thought that we could communicate via skype and webcams but that turned out to be very hit and miss.

She was determined that she would become a great singer though and found an interesting website that had a full multimedia guide on how to sing better.

I was skeptical at first of course being a singing teacher but thought it looked decent so encouraged her to try it because our online voice lessons were not going well.

A few weeks later Emma called me and just RAVED about how good this system was and how she could use it whenever she wanted to and how she could learn at her own pace and of course how handy ot was seeing that she was 100 miles from any singing teacher.

Ouch! A bit of a blow to my ego as a vocal coach! I was however intrigued about how you can learn to sing online using learn to sing software.

I headed over to the website she got this program off called singorama to check it out.

If you want a closer look too then the website is here.

I must say once i downloaded and looked through what it had to offer I was impressed. Everything i would teach to an up and coming singer was included as well as some great tools for them to use that either mimicked what a teacher like myself might do or sometimes going further such as the pitch software included.

I decided to do an experiment and change my teaching style

I gave my new students a copy of Singorama and told them to use this to learn and practice and come back to me once a week to clarify anything they did not understand and to get feedback from me and advice which the program could not give. I figured i could take on more students this way, and while I would be getting less hours I thought the quality of the time I spent with those students would be better.

The results of using online voice lessons like this were quite interesting.

  • Students came to me more prepared
  • Students came to me more passionate about singing
  • Students that had been difficult to teach just “got it” all of a sudden
  • I Enjoyed my teaching a lot more!

I actually did lose a few students who said they only needed this system which was why I think singing teachers might hate me for recommending this learn to sing software. However I believe that it has created a new avenue of learning for aspiring singers and that we singing teachers can adapt and do better teaching anyway.

You can learn how to sing online and become a better singer in a few weeks with this system with all the advantages that Emma told me. Voice lessons online may not be the only way to learn but i think they are a very helpful and inexpensive way to get started or to improve your knowledge of singing and fine tune it. After this you may need a coach to really get the best out of your voice but many also think this program is all they need.

In any case, if you are interested I highly recommend you check out Singorama and decide if it is right for you.
